Slavin won the award in 2020-21 after recording 15 points and just two penalty minutes in 52 contests. In 2021-22, he had four goals, 42 points, and 10 penalty minutes in 79 contests. The last defenseman to win the award in back-to-back years was Red Kelly, who took it in 1953 and 1954.

Slavin helped get Carolina's offense going with his assist on Teuvo Teravainen's late first-period goal, then later dished for another helper on the second of Max Domi's second-period goals. On the whole this series, Slavin was fantastic, tallying eight total points.
