Trotman underwent knee surgery back on Jan. 15 to repair a torn meniscus. He skated in eight games with Pittsburgh last season, while posting four goals and 14 points in 27 games at the minor-league level. 

Trotman underwent the procedure on Thursday to repair a torn meniscus. He is expected to be sidelined for four-to-six weeks. He started the season on injured reserve, but it was unclear why until now. 

Trotman was put on waivers by the Penguins on Sunday. He played in eight NHL games last season.
