Valeri Nichushkin has signed an eight-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche.
The deal will reportedly carry a cap hit of $6.125 million. Nichushkin would have been eligible for unrestricted free agency on Wednesday. He had a career-year in 2021-22 with 25 goals and 52 points in 62 games. Nichushkin also racked up 180 shots and 89 hits.
Contract talks between Valeri Nichushkin and Colorado "have progressed" and taken "on a positive turn," according to Pierre LeBrun.
LeBrun believes there is a "decent chance of an extension getting done before free agency opens Wednesday." Nichushkin and the Avalanche had reportedly been working on bridging the gap on the AAV of a new deal.
Colorado is still talking contract with pending UFA Valeri Nichushkin.
"Sides are facing a gap on AAV, but still trying to work towards a new deal," reported Chris Johnston on Sunday. Nichushkin will be eligible for unrestricted free agency on July 13 if the two sides don't come to an agreement. He would be an attractive player for several teams if he tests the market.

Nichushkin has been a gem for the Avalanche since signing on in August 2019. He had his best season of his career in 2021-22 when he scored 25 times and added 27 assists in 62 games and followed it up with nine goals and 15 points in 20 games as the Avs won the Stanley Cup.
