Richard Panik has been assigned to Bridgeport of the AHL.
Panik played in four games with the Islanders after he was summoned from the minors on Nov. 20 and he picked up one assist.

Panik is expected to play in Saturday's contest. This will be his first game of the 2021-22 campaign.

The Islanders got Panik along with a 2021 second-round pick from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Nick Leddy back in July. When the Islanders acquired Panik, he was projected to serve as a bottom-six forward, but it seems he ultimately didn't make the team. Panik's $2.75 million cap hit for the upcoming season and 2022-23 makes it very unlikely that he'll be claimed.

The Islanders are giving up a great defenseman, but he only had one year left on his deal and they might have lost him anyways in the upcoming expansion draft. Panik had four goals and 13 points in 48 contests last season. He comes with a $2.75 million cap hit for each of the next two seasons, but the Red Wings will be retaining half of that cap burden. He'll likely serve as a bottom-six forward with the Islanders.
