Green could extend his career if he really wanted to, but after spending time away from hockey during the COVID lockdown, he's gained a new perspective. “Being an athlete isn’t the only part of who I am,” Green said. “I am a husband, father, son, brother, uncle. I’ve been very fortunate to turn my passion into my profession, but at this point in my life, I’m considering other things that I feel called to do.” Green's final game came on Feb. 26th. He had the option to join Edmonton in the 2020 playoffs, but he exercised his right to opt out. He finished with 150 goals and 501 points in 880 career contests. He finished second in Norris Trophy voting in 2009 and 2010. Those were his two big campaigns offensively. At his height he scored 31 goals and 73 points in 68 contests in 2008-09. Unfortunately, injuries hampered his career, but for a time he was the best offensive defenseman in the league.

Mike Green has decided against participating in the 2020 playoffs.

"Due to the uncertainties surrounding COVID-19 and after much consideration, I've decided for deeply personal family health reasons, not to participate in the return to play," Green said in a statement. "This has been a hard decision knowing I'm going to miss the opportunity to compete in the playoffs with a Stanley Cup contender. I wish the best of luck to the guys and I appreciate the Edmonton Oilers support." The deadline for players to decide whether or not to participate in the NHL Return to Play Program is scheduled for Monday. Green isn't the only one to exercise the right to opt out so far and it wouldn't be surprising if he wasn't the last.

Green suffered a sprained MCL back in February, but he was on track to recover by early April. At this point the injury is well behind him, so he should be able to play going forward.
