Leo Komarov has signed with SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL.
"Toughest decision I ever made in my career..to leave all my teammates and trainers who have been like a family to me for the last 3 years," Komarov posted on Instagram. "It hurts me more than anyone could think. Let's put all the rumors away, I made this decision myself. Nobody else did it for me. … Big thank you to the fans who supported and cheered for me. It means a lot. I hope you guys are gonna win the Cup." He was put on unconditional waivers Saturday and his contract with the Islanders was terminated.
Leo Komarov has been put on unconditional waivers.
Komarov and the Islanders can mutually terminate his contract is he goes unclaimed. A recent report suggested that he'll sign with the KHL's SKA Saint Petersburg so that's presumably what will happen after he parts ways with the Islanders.
Leo Komarov will reportedly play for SKA Saint Petersburg, but nothing has been finalized yet.
Komarov was reassigned to the AHL on Oct. 19, but he never reported to the minors. Given that, it wouldn't be surprising if he did ultimately head to the KHL. "I heard those rumors, too," Islanders coach Barry Trotz said. "I have nothing official as of yet."
Leo Komarov went unclaimed on waivers.
The Islanders can now move Komarov to the AHL. He has no points in one game with New York this season.
