Justin Williams has been hired by the Carolina Hurricanes as Special Advisor to the General Manager.
"Justin has been a major part of the culture change that we've undergone here," said Hurricanes GM Don Waddell. "We're thrilled to add someone with his experience to our front office." Williams announced his retirement on Oct. 8, 2020 after playing in 1,264 career NHL games.
Justin Williams has announced his retirement.
Williams sat out the first part of the 2019-20 season to take a break and contemplate his career. He eventually signed with the Carolina Hurricanes in January and went on to record 11 points (eight goals, three assists) in 20 contests. Williams also had one goal in seven postseason outings. He amassed 320 goals and 797 points across 1,264 games with Carolina, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Washington during his 19-year career.
Justin Williams hasn't made a decision yet on his future with free agency just a couple of days away.
"I don't have that answer. Ask Justin," Hurricanes GM Don Waddell joked when asked recently about Williams' status. "Like we did last year, we left it in Justin's hands to take some time and make a decision on what he wants to do." Williams ended up playing in 20 regular-season games and seven postseason matches last year after he rejoined Carolina in January.
The Carolina Hurricanes would be happy to get Justin Williams back, but they're not counting on anything.
Whether or not Williams would retire was a big question mark last year too. Williams ultimately decided to re-sign with the Carolina Hurricanes, but only after taking the first few months of the season off. He was still useful though with eight goals and 11 points in 20 contests. He would continue to provide the Hurricanes with veteran leadership and some complimentary scoring if he decided to return for the 2020-21 campaign, but his plans aren't known yet. “It’s almost the same as last year,” Hurricanes GM Don Waddell said. “You tell us what you’re going to do and when you’re going to do it.” In the meantime, the Hurricanes will place their focus elsewhere.
