Jacob Markstrom doesn't have an explanation for his struggles during the second round against Edmonton.
Markstrom went from being a Vezina Trophy candidate in the regular season and a superb netminder in the first round to posting a 5.12 GAA and .852 save percentage in five games against Edmonton. “I don’t have an explanation. Obviously, if I had it, I would have changed it after Game 1,” Markstrom said. “I think I need some more time to kind of sit on it and go back and re-watch it and study it. But whatever happened, it’s happened, and you have to move on and you have to learn from it.” Markstrom sidestepped questions about the possibility of him playing hurt by suggesting that no one is 100%. He did add that he felt comfortable though between the pipes. Whatever the case may be, it wouldn't be surprising to see Markstrom bounce right back once the 2022-23 campaign starts.
Jacob Markstrom turned aside 30 of 35 shots in a 5-4 overtime loss to Edmonton in Game 5 on Thursday.
After an amazing regular season and a strong showing in the first round, Markstrom struggled mightily against Edmonton in the second round. He had a 5.12 GAA and .852 save percentage in five starts during Calgary's series against Edmonton. The Oilers deserve plenty of credit for that and some of that was also on the Flames' defense, but not all of it. There were goals in this series that Markstrom should have saved and ultimately he's part of the reason that Calgary's postseason run has now ended. To be fair, he also played a key role in getting Calgary to the second round in the first place.
Jacob Markstrom is expected to start in Game 5 against Edmonton on Thursday night.
Markstrom allowed four goals on 25 shots in Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the Oilers. He has lost his past three starts and has a save percentage of .850 in Calgary's second-round series. Markstrom has a 5-6 record this postseason with a 2.78 GAA and .906 SV%.
Jacob Markstrom stopped 21 of 25 shots in a 5-3 loss to Edmonton in Game 4 Tuesday night.
Edmonton has a lot of offensive talent, but Markstrom could have been better in this one. He's allowed at least four goals in each of the first four contests of his second round series.
