Frederik Andersen said Wednesday that he was close to being able to return from an MCL tear.

Andersen sustained the knee injury back on Apr. 16 in a game against Colorado. He sat out the final six games of the regular season and all 14 of Carolina's playoff contests due to the ailment. The New York Rangers eliminated Carolina in Game 7 on Monday to advance to the Eastern Conference Final. Andersen had been working his way back during the postseason. He was superb in his first season as a member of the Hurricanes with a 35-14-3 record, a 2.17 GAA and .922 SV% in 52 appearances.

The Hurricanes netminder has yet to play in the playoffs after he was injured on April 16. Antti Raanta is expected to be between the pipes for Carolina although the official announcement will not be made until later in the day.

Andersen did participate in Saturday's practice, but it seems he's not quite ready to play. He hasn't gotten in net at all during the 2022 playoffs.

It remains to be seen if Andersen will be available for Saturday's contest. If he does dress, it will almost certainly be as the backup goaltender. Keep in mind that Andersen hasn't played since April 16 and sending him in cold for Game 6 of the second round would be a big gamble for the Hurricanes. Besides, Antti Raanta hasn't given Carolina a good reason to replace him.
