Duncan Keith has announced his retirement.

Keith's retirement had been previously reported, but until now it wasn't official. He'll go down as one of the Blackhawks' greats. He had 106 goals and 646 points in 1,256 games with the first 1,192 of those contests being in Chicago. He won the Norris Trophy in 2010 and 2014 and helped the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup in 2010, 2013, and 2015. His performance in the 2015 playoffs was especially good with him scoring three goals and 21 points in 23 contests while averaging an unbelievable 31:07 minutes. That effort earned him the Conn Smythe. His retirement clears $5,538,462 off the books for Edmonton next season while Chicago will assume a $5,538,462 recapture penalty in 2022-23 and $1,938,456 in 2023-24.

Edmonton is poised to clear $5.54 million in cap space with Keith set to call it a career. Unfortunately, the decision will hurt Chicago, as it will result in a cap recapture penalty of $5.54 million next season and $1.94 million in 2023-24, according to CapFriendly. Keith has one more season left on his 13-year, $72 million contract. He provided 106 goals and 646 points in 1,256 games during his 17-year career. Keith won three Stanley Cup titles as a member of the Blackhawks, while winning the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2015, and he won the Norris Trophy on two occasions.

Although Duncan Keith no longer plays for the Blackhawks, Chicago would be hit with a big recapture penalty if he decides to retire this summer.

The Oilers have reportedly asked Keith if he could inform them of his future plans by July 1. Keith did fine last season, but given that he's turning 39-years-old on July 16, it wouldn't be shocking if he opts to retire. If he did decide to retire, it'd actually create a cap opportunity for the Oilers. Not only would his $5,538,462 cap hit come off the book, but Edmonton would get an additional $3.4 million cap credit for the 2022-23 campaign. Chicago on the other hand, would be charged $5.5 million against the cap in 2022-23 and an addition $2 million against the cap in 2023-24 if he decides to retire this summer. Chicago is in an okay cap position as it is, so they're capable of navigating through that scenario if Keith retires, but it obviously would limit their options. That all said, Keith enjoyed his first season with Edmonton and he may simply opt to play out the final season of his contract there.

Keith added two helpers, including one on the power play, in the second period. He only had one assist in eight contests going into Friday's match.
