Veteran netminder Curtis McElhinney has announced his retirement.
The 38-year-old played last season for Tampa Bay, winning the Stanley Cup but he was unable to find another team to sign him this season and announced his retirement on Saturday on Instagram. McElhinney finishes his career with a 94-95-20 record with a 2.83 GAA and a .907 save percentage. We wish him well in retirement.
Curtis McElhinney allowed five goals in Friday's 5-2 loss to the Dallas Stars.
McElhinney got roughed up in what was a meaningless game for the team in front of him. This was a must-win game for the Stars and they will be thankful that Jon Cooper decided to give his starting goaltender, Andrei Vasilevskiy a break. McElhinney won't shoulder the full blame for the loss as the defensive zone coverage by the Lightning was mediocre at best. The 37-year-old owns a 4-6-2 record with a 3.09 goals-against average and .875 save percentage.
Curtis McElhinney will be in the crease for Friday's game against Dallas.
McElhinney earned a shutout last Saturday despite getting a shootout loss to Detroit when he stopped 15 shots. He has a 4-5-2 record this season with a 2.91 goals-against average and .879 save percentage in 11 appearances. Coach Jon Cooper wouldn't say who would play in goal for the Lightning on Saturday night versus Florida.
Curtis McElhinney saved 15 shots in a 1-0 shootout loss on Saturday.
McElhinney picked up the rare shutout loss. He wasn't challenged too often in regulation time though. He faced no more than five shots in any period. By contrast he was beaten four times in eight shootout rounds.
