Claude Giroux is looking forward to playing at home.

Giroux signed a three-year, $19.5 million contract with the Ottawa Senators. “You think about it your whole career," Giroux said. "A couple of weeks after the season, I had a thought about it, and the more I started thinking about it, (this) made a lot of sense. This is a team you don’t like to play against, they’re a pain in the butt. They have a lot of character and a lot of skill, it’s just something you want to be a part of.” The Senators have been in a rebuilding cycle, but they're hoping Giroux can help push them into contention. He had 21 goals and 65 points in 75 games last season.

The Ottawa Senators have signed Claude Giroux to a three-year, $19.5 million contract extension.

Giroux had 21 goals and 65 points in 75 contests last season. He's 34-years-old and has started to show his age, so this might not help Senators fans as much as they're hoping. That said, for a three-year contract at that cap hit, he's worth the risk. This deal also further signals the Senators' intent to transition from a rebuilding team to a playoff contender.

If Claude Giroux ends up on the free agent market, the Edmonton Oilers might make a push for him.

Naturally the prospect of having Giroux play alongside Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl would be appealing for both sides. The question is though if Edmonton would be able to fit Giroux in under the cap. The Oilers don't have much cap space to work with, though they would gain more flexibility if Duncan Keith decides to retire. Ultimately, Giroux signing with Edmonton doesn't strike us as the most likely outcome, but it certainly would be a very interesting result.

Florida GM Bill Zito hopes to bring back pending UFA Claude Giroux.

The Panthers have plenty of decisions to make this offseason with more than a third of the roster on expiring contracts, plus Keith Yandle’s buyout cap charge of $5.4 million. Florida will have to be creative and may have to make a trade or two. Giroux would like to be back with the Panthers if both sides can make something work.
