Cam Talbot wasn't looking to be traded.
Talbot is happy to be part of the Ottawa Senators, but he also wants to set the record straight about what happened during his final days in Minnesota. After the Wild re-signed Marc-Andre Fleury, there was speculation that it would create a goaltending controversy if Talbot wasn't dealt. Initially Wild GM Bill Guerin shot against that idea, but when he did trade Talbot to Ottawa, he cited a desire to avoid "awkwardness" as part of his motivation. That's understandable given that both netminders were looking to be starters, but Talbot still wasn't asking to be traded. "I didn't really want to be moved," Talbot said. "It played out in the media that maybe I had some ill will toward the organization or something like that. It wasn't like that at all." Regardless, he was dealt and is now projected to be the Senators' starter while Minnesota will feature Fleury in net.
Wild GM Bill Guerin ultimately felt that trading Cam Talbot was best to avoid "awkwardness."
The Minnesota Wild signed Marc-Andre Fleury to a two-year, $7 million contract, putting Talbot in the position of being the 1B or backup goaltender next season. While Guerin initially said that his team was "set" and expressed his intention to go forward with a Fleury-Talbot tandem, after reflecting on it further, he changed his mind. "It's probably best to just move in a different direction with Cam," Guerin said. "That way there's no drama. There's no controversy or anything like that." Talbot was dealt to Ottawa in exchange for Filip Gustavsson.
The Ottawa Senators have acquired Cam Talbot from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Filip Gustavsson.
Wild GM Bill Guerin at least publicly was pushing for idea that Talbot and Marc-Andre Fleury would remain together next season as part of a goaltending tandem. Guerin even recently said that his team was "set right now, and that’s the way it goes." Perhaps Guerin was simply trying to make it seem like he had a stronger hand and didn't need to make a trade to avoid a goaltending controversy or maybe he changed his mind. Either way, Talbot will now head to Ottawa where he has a shot at being the team's starter. He had a 32-12-4 record, 2.76 GAA, and .911 save percentage in 49 contests last season. He's in the final year of his deal and comes with a $3,666,667 cap hit.
Wild GM Bill Guerin doesn't feel any pressure to make a move with regard to his goaltending situation.
"Cam Talbot’s under contract. George can say whatever the hell he wants," said Guerin referring to Talbot's agent. "My team’s set right now, and that’s the way it goes. We can have all the discussions we want. Cam’s a member of our team. We really like Cam. All we’re trying to do is win." It is believed that Talbot doesn't want to be traded, but could be eyeing an extension to get a bit of a raise.
