"It's a huge rush of energy and excitement to come to Carolina," said Burns, who was dealt with Lane Pederson by the Sharks in exchange for Steven Lorentz, Eetu Makiniemi and a conditional third-round pick in 2023. "It's always a place that when you play there, it's crazy. I was always a guy that would ride to the games early and see there's people out there tailgating. It's just such a special place and a loud building." He believes that the move will be "a very easy fit" and he expects to be paired with Jaccob Slavin. Burns racked up10 goals, 54 points, 203 shots, 150 blocks and 55 hits over 82 games last season. 

"Brent has been an elite offensive defenseman in the NHL for a long time," said Hurricanes GM Don Waddell. "He has produced at a consistent level throughout his career, and we believe adding him brings us closer to our goal of winning the Stanley Cup. Lane is a young center who helps solidify our depth down the middle." Carolina also received forward Lane Pederson from the Sharks in exchange for forward Steven Lorentz, goaltender Eetu Makiniemi and a conditional third-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft. San Jose has agreed to retain 33% of the remaining salary and cap hit on Burns' contract as part of the deal, so his cap hit for the next three seasons with Carolina will be $5.36 million. Burns produced 10 goals, 54 points, 203 shots, 150 blocks and 55 hits in 2021-22. 

Burns scored in the second period on a power-play which is good for fantasy players but he still did not play very well overall as he finished the night with a minus-3 rating. Burns has 10 goals and 53 points in 80 games. 

Burns has nine goals and 50 points in 75 games, a very good season for most blueliners, but well off his career high of 83. At 37 years of age, you cannot expect Burns to be one of the best anymore so a 50-55 point season is quite a good year at this stage of his career.
