Alexandar Georgiev has signed a three-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche.
The deal reportedly as an average annual value of $3.4 million. Georgiev was acquired from the New York Rangers on Thursday in exchange for three draft picks. "When he was a starter, he played really well, and he wanted a bigger opportunity, and he's got that opportunity," said Avalanche GM Joe Sakic. "He was looking forward to the challenge. What I like about it, he played in a big market. He was in New York. He can deal with a lot of that stuff. We're excited for him."
Alexandar Georgiev was acquired to be Colorado's starter, according to Avalanche GM Joe Sakic.
"(Georgiev) is as excited as we are," said Sakic on Thursday night after the Avalanche obtained him in a trade with the New York Rangers. The team sees Pavel Francouz as a great No. 2 option who is capable of starting a lot of games. This news will make Georgiev a popular goalie in fantasy pools going into the 2022-23 season.
Colorado has acquired goaltender Alexandar Georgiev from the New York Rangers in exchange for three draft picks.
The Rangers will get a third-round and fifth-round selection in the 2022 NHL Draft as well as a third-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft from the Avalanche in the deal. There was plenty of speculation after the season that the Rangers would try to move Georgiev. He is slated to be a restricted free agent in July 13 and he will have arbitration rights. This move by the Avalanche means that Darcy Kuemper is expected to become an unrestricted free agent, while Georgiev will compete with Pavel Francouz for starts next season.
Alexandar Georgiev is eligible for restricted free agency this summer.
Georgiev is in line for a qualifying offer of $2.65 million and there is plenty of speculation that the Rangers won't be willing to provide that to him. He would become an unrestricted free agent if New York decides to walk away, but a trade for his negotiation rights would make much more sense for the team if they can make it happen. It's expected that the Rangers will look to get a less expensive netminder to be Igor Shesterkin's backup.
