2024 Player Outlook

Like many players in the COVID era, Devontez Walker's college career took a strange path. He started out at North Carolina Central but never played because the season was canceled. He then transferred to Kent State before finally landing at North Carolina State with Drake Maye. His per game numbers were able to translate and even slightly improve in terms of receptions and yards after facing tougher competition with the Tar Heels so there is reason to be hopeful. His first task is surpassing Rashod Bateman as the WR2 on the Ravens. Then he has the taller order of surpassing either Zay Flowers or Mark Andrews to be a top two target on the team. He's more of a dynasty stash or a waiver add than someone we are drafting in redraft.

It’s a rookie-heavy list for a healthy Ravens team. Fourth-rounder Walker had a quiet training camp in the Ravens’ receiver corps.

Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said Lamar Jackson wanted a big-bodied outside receiver in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Baltimore took Devontez Walker out of North Carolina with the 113th pick in the draft after posting 699 yards and seven touchdowns over eight games in 2023. Jackson, per DeCosta, wanted a big outside wideout at the end of the first round. The team waited until Day Two to take Walker. “Just an explosive guy,” DeCosta said of Walker, who tested well at the NFL Combine. “I think with us, one of the things that we’ve been missing a little bit is that big, linear, outside, field-stretcher type of guy.” Look for Walker to function as the Ravens’ primary field stretcher while Zay Flowers works the short areas of the field alongside Mark Andrews.

Ravens selected North Carolina WR Devontez Walker with the No. 113 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Walker (6’1/176) committed to North Carolina Central, an FCS school, after high school but never played a snap for the Eagles as the 2020 season was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He then transferred to Kent State and saw his first meaningful action in 2022, breaking out with 58 catches for 921 yards and 11 scores. Walker’s transfer saga continued after he went back home to play for North Carolina. The NCAA declared ineligible for the 2023 season but eventually reversed course after four missed games for Walker. Despite joining the team a month into the season, Walker proved to be an elite play-maker yet again, going for 699 yards and seven scores on 41 grabs. He punctuated his draft profile with a 4.36 40-yard dash and elite burst measurements. Both traits showed up on tape as he consistently beat defenders deep with his speed and by winning contested grabs. Walker’s route tree is limited to downfield duties, but that’s a valuable role in Baltimore’s offense. If Walker can earn playing time early, he will undoubtedly come up with a few splash plays in his first season.
