The Athletic’s Joe Buscaglia says Bills RBs Ray Davis and Ty Johnson are 2a and 2b in the Bills’ backfield based on practice usage.

Davis is the Bills’ fourth round pick from this year’s draft and he most recently tallied eight carries for 58 yards in the Bills’ preseason Week 2 game against the Steelers. Though fantasy managers have worry over the potential for Davis to eat into James Cook’s role, Buscaglia thinks Davis is a 2a to Cook, and not a clear backup or 1b. Based on practice usage, Buscaglia believes veteran Ty Johnson is the 2b and will split backup time with Davis due to his overall skillset matching Cook’s. The rookie Davis is not likely to eat into Cook’s role immediately, but Ty Johnson could also see backup reps through his pass-catching skillset.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler believes Bills RB Ray Davis could have a “sneaky-big impact” in 2024.

Taken with the 128th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Davis — a five-year college player out of Kentucky — could immediately factor into Buffalo’s rushing attack, Fowler said. “Great complement to [James] Cook and should get a lot of goal-line and short-yardage work, which should result in some touchdowns,” an NFL scout said of the stout Davis, who ran for 1,063 yards over 12 games in his final collegiate season. The Bills under offensive coordinator Joe Brady turned run heavy in 2023, functioning as a conservative ball-control offense with a fairly high neutral rush rate. If that continues in 2024, Davis could see a decent amount of snaps and touches behind Cook. Davis would figure to work as Buffalo’s lead back if Cook misses time this season.

Bills selected Kentucky RB Ray Davis with the No. 128 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

After five years of college ball and three different programs letting him carry the load, Davis (5’8/211) is ready-made for an NFL job. He began his career at Temple and topped 1,100 yards from scrimmage on just over 200 touches. Following a COVID-lost 2020, Davis transferred to Vanderbilt. He missed most of his first season at Vanderbilt because of a toe injury but racked up 1,042 rushing yards on 232 carries in the following season. One transfer later and he posted 1,129 yards and 14 scores while also pitching in for 323 yards and an absurd seven more touchdowns through the air. Davis has solid vision and good patience behind the line, waiting for plays to develop before he makes a decision. He also has smooth hands in the passing game but could use some work in pass protection. Davis is as polished as he is partially because of how long he spent in college. He should get a chance to spell James Cook, and his penchant for finding the end zone could see carries near the goal line in 2024.
