2024 Player Outlook

If you bought into the value that was George Pickens in 2023 you were rewarded nicely as the second-year receiver finished with 1,140 yards and five touchdowns on 63 receptions all the while catching footballs from the likes of Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph and Mitchell Trubisky. 2024 brings about a change at QB with the Steelers signing Russell Wilson and trading for Justin Fields. Are either of these two an improvement over the QB's that Pickens has played with over the first two years of his career? Honestly, maybe not, but we will allow of the possibility and therefore we should be excited for what Pickens can be as he comes off the board as WR28 in terms of positional ADP.

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reports that the Steelers have been getting calls about the availability of WR George Pickens.

The Steelers currently do not have a pick in tonight’s second round. That was dealt back in March when they acquired wide receiver DK Metcalf from the Seahawks. A potential deal to move Pickens shouldn’t come as a surprise, although the possibility was shut down earlier this week when trade rumors surfaced. “No,” Steelers general manager Omar Khan said on Tuesday when asked about a possible trade involving the four-year veteran. “We’re glad we have George and DK (Metcalf) here. I think they’re gonna be exciting for everyone to watch.” Pickens, who is in the final year of his rookie contract, has led the Steelers in targets, receptions, receiving yards, and TD receptions since entering the NFL in 2022.

Steelers GM Omar Khan said he’s “glad we have George and DK here” and shut down speculation that the team could trade Pickens.

“I think they’re going to be exciting for everyone to watch,” Khan added. Pickens may yet execute a hold in entering the final year of his rookie contract, as has been rumored by team beat writers for a few months. But this does throw some cold water on the idea that they’d move Pickens to get back into the second or third round of the draft on Friday.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter believes George Pickens “could be deemed expendable” in a draft day trade.

Schefter came up with a long list of players who could be expendable on rookie deals — for the most part it’s the failed prospects you’d expect — but Pickens caught our eye. It sure feels like Pickens and D.K. Metcalf ran the same route tree last season, and his football character has been considered an issue by team beat writers. Not to mention the fact that Pickens his entering the final year of his contract and we’ve had beat writer speculation about a hold-in. It makes sense that a team that didn’t find it’s preferred first-wave receiver in the draft could dial back and pick up Pickens for a late Day 2 or early Day 3 pick. The talent is certainly there.

The Athletic’s Mike DeFabo thinks George Pickens “could ‘hold in’” at training camp.

To be specific, DeFabo writes “if the Steelers think they can simply have Pickens play out his final season, they might need to realize that they aren’t the only ones who determine where things go from here.” DeFabo has already written before this offseason about how the Steelers should trade Pickens, but the idea of Pickens potentially holding in is new. Pickens is entering the final year of his rookie deal and, like the Brandon Aiyuk saga this past August, it probably makes sense for Pickens to push every lever to get an extension before playing in 2025. We don’t consider this a major wart on Pickens fantasy value just yet, but it is something to keep an eye on.
