The Dallas Morning News’ Calvin Watkins reports the Cowboys plan to pick up the fifth-year option for OG Tyler Smith.
Smith is a two-time Pro Bowler who is the unquestioned leader of the Cowboys’ offensive line following the retirement of Zack Martin and Tyron Smith. Smith is one of a handful of players the Cowboys need to sign to a long-term extension in the near future, but it’s unlikely he’ll get a deal done before Micah Parsons. He’ll be under contract through the 2026 season, meaning there’s no rush to ink him to a deal as long as he doesn’t threaten a hold out.
Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy said LG Tyler Smith is a candidate to replace Tyron Smith at LT in 2024.
With Tyron Smith officially a Jet, Tyler Smith, who started 16 games at left tackle in 2022, could have a chance to move back into the role next season. Smith earned a PFF blocking grade of 71.4 in that season and allowed six sacks on 39 quarterback pressures. His familiarity with the role and the Cowboys offense as a whole could make for an easy transition back to left tackle next season.
Cowboys LG Tyler Smith (foot) was removed from the Super Wild Card Weekend injury report and will play against the Packers.
Smith missed Week 18 with the foot issue but is good to go for the Cowboys’ playoff opener versus Green Bay. The Cowboys are a remarkably healthy team after 18 weeks of football. Backup quarterback Cooper Rush is the only player with a game-day designation heading into the weekend. He is listed as questionable with an illness.
Cowboys LG Tyler Smith (foot) returned to practice on Wednesday.
Smith was a limited participant, putting him on track to play in the Wild Card Round. He missed Week 18 with the foot issue, but the Cowboys were considerable favorites versus the lowly Commanders, so there wasn’t much reason to rush him back from the injury. Dallas should be relatively healthy heading into their playoff opener.
