NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports RG Mekhi Becton, formerly of the Eagles, has signed a two-year, $20 million contract with the Chargers.
Becton was the 11th overall pick of the NFL Draft by the Jets in 2020, but missed nearly two full seasons with knee injuries. After starting 30 games in four years with New York, the Eagles brought him in to play right guard. Becton started 15 games for Philadelphia, had a 75.2 overall grade per PFF (21st among Gs), and won a Super Bowl. He excels in the run game, which will fit right in with Jim Harbaugh’s Chargers who needed help on the interior offensive line.
Eagles RG Mekhi Becton (concussion) will play in Week 9 against the Jaguars.
The run-blocking specialist returns after sitting out in Week 8. Becton will make his presence felt against the Jaguars’ defensive line, which bodes positively for both Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts.
Mekhi Becton (concussion) did not practice Thursday.
Becton still has time to clear the NFL’s concussion protocol but his second Week 8 absence bodes negatively for his availability. Backup OG Tyler Steen is the expected starter if Becton is unable to play. Steen was a 2023 third-round NFL draft pick and has fared well in limited action this year, earning a 79.7 PFF pass-blocking grade on 58 qualifying snaps.
Eagles RG Mekhi Becton (concussion) did not practice Wednesday.
Becton left Week 7 with a concussion and did not return. Second-year guard Tyler Steen took over and played and took the bulk of the snaps for the second time this season. He will draw the start if Becton doesn’t clear the league’s concussion protocol before Sunday.
