Commanders released K Zane Gonzalez.
The move comes less than two months after Washington re-signed Gonzalez following his 2024 late-season heroics. He converted five of his seven field goal attempts during six regular season games for the Commanders. Gonzalez, who has played for five teams since entering the NFL in 2017, will likely catch on with another team this summer.
Commanders re-signed K Zane Gonzalez.
After being sidelined for the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Gonzalez caught on with the Commanders late in the 2024 campaign and ended up converting 5-of-7 field goals (71.4 percent) during six regular season games while also going 7-for-8 in the playoffs with one field goal of 50-plus yards. Gonzalez is unlikely to be handed the Commanders’ starting kicker job for next season, but will clearly have a chance to compete for it in camp.
Commanders coach Dan Quinn said he’s not worried a bout K Zane Gonzalez’s hip injury ahead of Saturday’s Divisional Round game against the Lions.
We’ll assume Gonzalez is good to go for Saturday’s game based on this statement. Gonzalez was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice after the team tried out three kickers earlier in the week, and the veteran was again spotted on the practice field Thursday. Including the postseason, Gonzalez has converted on five of his seven field goal attempts this season, which includes a 50-yard field goal he made in last week’s win over the Buccaneers.
Commanders tried out three kickers as kicker Zane Gonzalez (hip) practices in full on Wednesday.
Gonzalez was listed with a hip injury and limited in practice Tuesday, but practiced fully Wednesday. The Commanders still tried out Matthew Wright, Aldrick Rosas, and Tucker McCann at kicker. They are presumably looking for depth on the slim chance Gonzalez is not ready for Saturday’s Divisional Round matchup against the Lions. He kicked the game-winner in the Commanders’ Wild Card win over the Buccaneers and made 5-of-7 field goals in six regular season games. Expect Gonzalez to play; one of Wright, Rosas, or McCann could get the call if he does not.
