Jaguars released "TE" Tim Tebow.
It's probably a little overblown to say that Tebow made a mockery of the tight end position during Saturday night's initial preseason game with the Jaguars. But when there are viral clips of your blocking going around, it's generally not a great sign for your future unless you're Bobby Hart. Tebow was returned to the sea by Urban Meyer and will likely catch on with ESPN in some capacity again. Thankfully, we will only blurb on him fifteen more times.
Jaguars released TE Tim Tebow.
Tebow on Twitter Tuesday morning thanks the team for a chance to make their 53-man roster. In what was likely his last foray in professional football, Tebow, 33, tried to make the team as a tight end. He lasted one preseason game in which he didn't see a target. Signing his longtime buddy was always a questionable move by head coach Urban Meyer, whose first six months as an NFL coach have consisted of nonstop questionable decisions. Meyer said releasing Tebow was a "tough thing" but the "right thing." CBS Sports' Pete Prisco, a former Jaguars beat writer, said Tuesday it "was obvious [Tebow] couldn’t play tight end. Any other coach doesn’t even give him a chance." James O'Shaughnessy or Chris Manhertz will likely start the season as Jacksonville's TE1.
Darren Waller said he'd "love to help" Tim Tebow transition from quarterback to tight end this summer.
Waller made the slightly-more-traditional transition from receiver to tight end and is now among the game's elite at the position. “If he thinks he can learn from me, then I’d love to help him and help make his transition smoother,” Waller said. “I tried to find any information I could from watching guys play or asking people when I moved. So I’d love to continue to pass that on and help him be a better player.” Waller said he's confident Tebow will "find a way" in his latest NFL foray. Tebow, 33, signed as a tight end by longtime buddy Urban Meyer, could be used in a nontraditional role if he makes the Jaguars final roster, according to reports. In May, he signed a one year deal with Jacksonville for $920,000 -- none of it guaranteed.
ESPN's Dianna Russini reports Jaguars TE Tim Tebow could be used in a "Taysom Hill role" this season.
That escalated quickly. "There are people in camp right now who strongly believe the reason why Urban Meyer brought Tim Tebow in is not to play tight end, but actually to use him in that utility role, that Taysom Hill role that we see Sean Payton use in New Orleans," Russini said Friday on ESPN. "In terms of comparing the two, we always talk about on this show how much Sean Payton loves Taysom Hill. It's been very obvious over the years. That same kind of love is what Tim Tebow and Urban Meyer have between each other. It could be a very similar situation, but in terms of football, this is something we could be seeing." There was always potential for head coach Urban Meyer to deploy the former QB as a short yardage bulldozer in Jacksonville. Such a role for Tebow -- who rushed for 12 touchdowns in two seasons with the Broncos -- could be a major thorn for Trevor Lawrence's fantasy value, along with whichever Jaguars running back takes short yardage duties. Tebow's chances of making the Jags roster are far higher than most observers believed a couple weeks ago.
