Cardinals released S Shawn Williams.
A starter for a half decade in Cincinnati, Williams was demoted to reserve status last season. He was allowed to walk in free agency before signing with the Cardinals in late March. Now on the wrong side of 30, Williams' starting days are through, but he will presumably get calls from teams who need some experienced snaps in a pinch.
Cardinals signed S Shawn Williams, formerly of the Bengals, to a one-year contract.
Williams, 30 in May, played the first eight years of his career with the Bengals. Although he previously finished as the team's leader in tackles in 2019, Williams was moved to a backup role last year (despite being named a team captain) and primarily played special teams. His arrival means the Cardinals will likely forgo bringing back special teamer/safety Chris Banjo.
NFL suspended Bengals S Shawn Williams one game for stepping on a Dolphins player in Week 13.
Williams intentionally cleated Dolphins rookie OG Solomon Kindley in the back of the leg.
Williams recorded 114 tackles (80 solo), one sack, three defended passes and one interception aross 16 regular-season games in 2019.
Williams played an every-down role at strong safety for the Bengals in 2019, surpassing 1,000 defensive snaps in a season for the first time in his career. He's on track to reprise a similar role for Cincinnati in the 2020 season, giving him respectable value in IDP formats.
