Steelers were awarded Zach Mettenberger off waivers.
Mettenberger will compete with Landry Jones for the backup quarterback role in Pittsburgh to close out camp. Mettenberger was waived by the Chargers on Tuesday and scooped up by the Steelers on Wednesday. Mettenberger struggled in the last two seasons with the Tennessee Titans. In 14 games he threw 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Ben Roethlisberger often struggles to complete an entire season, so if Mettenberger beats out Jones for the backup role, we could see him taking some NFL snaps this upcoming season.
Chargers have waived QB Zach Mettenberger.
San Diego picked him up on a waiver claim in May after he was released from the Titans. This move was part of the cuts to get down to 75 on the roster as he was too far down on the depth chart to make the final team. Cincinnati and the Giants also had wanted him earlier in the year so it will be interesting to see if he is picked up by anyone else.
Zach Mettenberger had failed waiver claims from the Cincinnati Bengals and New York Giants.
It’s surprising the Bengals would be one of the teams interested with Mettenberger with Andy Dalton and A.J. McCarron already on the team, but the Giants could use more depth behind Eli Manning. Mettenberger will look to develop under Philip Rivers, a veteran he has never had throughout his young career and prove to be an option if Rivers has to many any games due to injury in 2016.
Chargers claimed former Titans QB Zach Mettenberger on waivers.
Mettenberger showed flashes of ability while in Tennessee but was never able to show enough to be given the job and avoid being replaced by Marcus Mariota. With this move however comes good news for him in that he will be reunited with his old head coach in Ken Whisenhunt who is now on the staff with the Chargers. Though he won't be anything more than a backup, and likely third stringer at that, he does get to work on his skillset once more.
