Player News
The Athletic's Jeff Zrebiec reports free agent DT Marcell Dareus is working out at Ravens minicamp.
Dareus last played in the league in 2019, when he appeared in six games for the Jaguars before being placed on IR due to a core muscle injury. Dareus was released at the end of the season after the Jaguars chose not to pick up the 2020 option on his contract, and he's been out of the league ever since. Heading into what would be his age-32 season, Dareus could still have something to offer as an early-down run stuffer. The former No. 3 overall pick by the Bills in 2011 is a two-time Pro Bowler and was named AP First-Team All-Pro in 2014.
Sirius XM NFL Radio’s Adam Caplan reports the Seahawks are looking at free agent DT Marcell Dareus.
They’ve also been linked to veteran free agents Clay Matthews and Everson Griffen. Dareus would give Seattle a run stopper to pair with Jarran Reed and Poona Ford. He started all six games and graded out positively over 206 snaps before injuries landed him on IR last year.
The Jaguars have declined to pick up Dareus' (abdomen) option for the 2020 season, making him a free agent, John Reid of The Florida Times-Union reports.
By letting Dareus go, the Jaguars will save $20 million against the salary cap in 2020. Dareus ended the 2019 season on injured reserve after undergoing core muscle surgery in October. He finished the year with 13 tackles and 0.5 sacks through six games. The timeline to return from his surgery was 4-to-6 weeks, so he should be ready to sign with a new team immediately.
Dareus (abdomen) spent the final 10 weeks of the season on injured reserve and finished 2019 with 13 tackles (eight solo) and a half-sack in six games.
Dareus underwent core muscle surgery Oct. 24 and was expected to face a 4-to-6 week recovery timeline, but he never returned from injured reserve. The 29-year-old has a $9.5 million club option for 2020 and could theoretically remain in Jacksonville, but the option carries a $22.5 million cap hit, meaning the team is likely to eat the $2.5 million dead cap figure and decline the option.
