Justin Smith has decided to retire
This was expected as Smith was apparently on the fence before the season ended but with the coaching overhaul, the team in transition and the injuries over the last few seasons, he is calling it quits.
Justin Smith is expected to announce his retirement from the NFL and the announcement could come early this week.
Smith is the second 49er expected to retire, along with linebacker Patrick Willis. San Francisco signed early in free agency, and so they should not lose much on the defensive line. The 49ers should still have a top-five fantasy defense going into 2015.
GM Trent Baalke said he plans to meet with Justin Smith after the combine to discuss whether Smith wants to play a 15th season.
Injuries have been ruining the end of Smith's career here and last season, he finished with a career-low 43 tackles. If he does sign on for a 15th season, the 49ers are obviously going to have to platoon him with someone like Tank Carradine which will obviously limit any fantasy value in IDP leagues.
Signs point to Justin Smith retiring after 14 NFL seasons.
Which sign would that be? The one hanging over his locker that said, \"Get out. You\'re 35-years old and you\'ve lost a step or two which is why your snap count was significantly lower this year than it\'s been in years past\"? Oh yeah, that sign.
