ESPN's Adam Schefter reports retired LB Gerald Hodges wants to play in 2020.
Hodges is a free agent. He was a fourth round pick in the 2013 draft and wound up playing 81 games for the Vikings, 49ers, Saints and Cardinals. Still, Hodges started at least eight games in just one of these seasons, mostly serving as a backup and contributor on special teams.
Hodges, who announced his retirement in April, has decided to play again, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Hodges announced over a month ago that his seventh NFL season was his last, but time away from the game has apparently caused the linebacker to have a change of heart. With Hodges reportedly already drawing interest from teams, he shouldn't be a free agent for too much longer.
49ers head coach Chip Kelly declined to say if Gerald Hodges would play Saturday against the Rams.
Hodges was inactive for today’s game against the Falcons because he violated team rules. He has started 10 games this season, including the last seven. Without him, the 49ers only inside linebackers are Nick Bellore and Michael Wilhoite. Hodges ranks third on the team in tackles (66), sacks (3) and has a team-best two interceptions. Chip Kelly has yet to say whether or not Hodges will play next week against the Rams.
Gerald Hodges logged 13 tackles (12 solo) in Sunday's 19-16 win over the Rams.
Hodges has been a beast for the 49ers since seeing an increased role in the team's defense, as he has now logged nine or more tackles in each of his last three games. He finished the year with 70 tackles (53 solo) and should remain a part of the 49ers defense moving forward while performing at a high level.
