Barwin announced his retirement Monday, Adam Caplan of Sirius XM reports.
Barwin floated out the idea of re-signing with the Eagles this offseason but an offer never came to fruition. Across 132 career games, the edge rusher recorded 368 tackles (272 solo), 56.5 sacks and seven forced fumbles in stints with the Texans, Eagles, Rams and Giants.
Free agent DE Connor Barwin confirmed he's been in contact with Eagles GM Howie Roseman about a potential return.
Roseman said he wants to evaluate some of the team's young talent in training camp before "reconvening" in a couple weeks. Barwin is hoping to play as a 4-3 edge rusher this upcoming season. To prepare for this transition, the 32-year-old has bulked up to 270 pounds, well above the 255 he played at last year.
Barwin has been in contact with the Eagles about a possible return, Mike Greger of Heavy.com reports.
Barwin was cut loose by the Giants in January, though the veteran isn't ready to hang it up just yet. "I'm trying to come back and play for the Eagles," stated Barwin. "I'm training right now and I've talked to Eagles GM Howie Roseman and they're going to see if they need any depth on the edge."
Connor Barwin would take a pay cut to stay with the Eagles.
The veteran is under contract for the next two seasons and is due seven million dollars for the upcoming year which is a steep price for a player that hasn’t been a difference maker in recent years. Barwin finished the year with 34 total tackles and five sacks in 2016 and is a prime candidate to either be released or have his contract restructured. His upside will remain limited in IDP leagues and fantasy owners can look elsewhere next season.
