Buccaneers LB coach and co-defensive coordinator Larry Foote will remain with the Buccaneers in 2025.
Foote was interviewed by the Lions to fill their vacant defensive coordinator position but told reporters he will be returning to the Buccaneers in 2025 after the Lions promoted from within to fill the position.
FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz reports Buccaneers inside linebackers coach and pass game coordinator “Larry Foote is expected to interview with the Lions” for their defensive coordinator vacancy.
Foote’s multifaceted role makes him an intriguing option for the Lions. Steeped in Todd Bowles’ blitz-heavy scheme, Foote could bring an aggressive mentality to a talented defense that suffered myriad injuries in 2024.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the "likely scenario" is the Bucs will promote ILBs coach Larry Foote and DL coach Kacy Rodgers to co-defensive coordinators.
A two-time Super Bowl champion with the Steelers as a linebacker, Foote, 41, retired after the 2014 season and immediately joined coach Bruce Arians' staff in Arizona as an assistant. He's been working alongside Arians and Todd Bowles for years. The same can be said for Rodgers, who was Bowles' DC with the Jets. With Bowles replacing Arians as head coach in Tampa Bay, it makes sense to promote this duo for continuity.
Larry Foote said the odds of him returning to the field are still “50-50.” Coach Bruce Arians has said Foote needs to make a determination on whether or not to play when rosters are cut down to 75 players during training camp.
Foote has become more of a coach, scouting and evaluating film and waiting on his knee to make a final determination on whether he will play again. All of the signs are pointing to Foote picking up a clipboard and ending his playing career.
