Derrick Shelby
Player News
Derrick Shelby has been placed on injured reserve with an Achilles injury.
Shelby has been a solid contributor to Falcons defensive line through the first six games of the season with eight total tackles and two tackles for loss before injuring his achilles in Week 6. In a corresponding move, they promoted Sharrod Neasman from the practice squad to fill his roster spot. He will now try and get healthy enough to play next season.
Derrick Shelby has agreed to a contract with the Falcons.
Shelby is the lesser know of the former Dolphins defensive ends to get paid on Wednesday afternoon, however at four years with a mere $7.5 million guaranteed, his price point is much more realistic and he will certainly provide the Falcons with plenty of help on the defensive line over the next couple of seasons. This is a very nice signing for Atlanta and definitely one that is fair to both sides.
Derrick Shelby is expected to move into the starting defensive end position after Cameron Wake suffered a season-ending Achilles injury Thursday.
Shelby already sees more snaps than Wake does, so this isn't much of a surprise. However, Chris McCain is also expected to see an increase of work and become part of a rotation between him and Shelby.
Derrick Shelby (eye) is not practicing Thursday.
Consider Shelby day-to-day as it sounds like he took a finger to the eye and is now dealing with some swelling and discomfort. It should subside in a day or two so expect him on the field for Week 2.
