Broncos released TE Owen Daniels.
Daniels was a decent option at TE for the Broncos last season but the $3 million he's owed for 2016 maybe a little steep especially considering he has QB to throw him the ball right now. He may yet return to Denver but it will have to be on a smaller deal but he will also be able to sign with whoever else is interested too. Only time will tell where he winds up.
Owen Daniels is considering retiring from the NFL.
Much has been made of Peyton Manning riding off into the sunset following a Super Bowl win, and now it appears Owen Daniels could do the same. Daniels was productive at times last season, and could still contribute to a good team, but the Broncos traded for Vernon Davis in part to improve their tight end play. If Daniels does retire, expect Denver to address the tight end position in the draft or free agency.
Owen Daniels admitted he will think about retirement this offseason.
Now that he has his Super Bowl ring, it may be easier for Owen Daniels to call it a career. Daniels has had a decent career, but nothing Tony Gonzalez-like. He is due $3.5 million next season and he will turn 34 years-old. Odds are, even if he doesn't retire, the Broncos may want to cut him.
Owen Daniels caught one of his two targets for 18 yards during the Broncos’ 24-10 win over the Panthers in Super Bowl 50.
As Denver was wont to do the entire 2015 season, they didn’t use their tight ends on Sunday. After tallying a pair of touchdowns last week, Daniels was once again nowhere to be found, which was on exactly par for the course. If Brock Osweiler becomes the starting quarterback in 2016 per Peyton Manning’s retirement, the tight ends will be used a little more often, but don’t expect any high increase in their usage. And Daniel is a guy you will want to completely leave alone, whether in season-long or daily leagues. With just 517 yards and three scores on 46 catches in 2015, the proof is in the pudding.
