Calvin Johnson
Player News
Calvin Johnson told ESPN that he got sick of playing injured and didn't want to take painkillers to stay on the field.
Until the NFL decides to use another avenue to relieve pain, many football players will have this decision to make. It’s unfortunate as Johnson still had a few seasons left in the tank of being one of the better receivers in the game. The Lions will hope Golden Tate along with Marvin Jones can step up to replace the production of Johnson.
Calvin Johnson reiterated Saturday that he will stay retired.
It has to be difficult to understand the wear and tear a football player endures in the NFL. But Calvin Johnson contends his desire to be retired is not fueled by a lack of playoff appearances or wins or losses, he was beat up. Johnson hauled in 731 passes in his career for 11,619 yards with 83 touchdowns for Detroit. In a recent interview, he reiterated his desire to stay retired and while fans are hopeful for a return, Johnson contends he is satisfied in retirement.
Update: Calvin Johnson has officially announced his retirement from the NFL.
It is a sad day in the NFL to see such an incredible talent call it a career after just nine seasons. "Megatron" will finish his terrific career having played in 135 games catching 731 balls for 11,619 yards and 83 touchdowns. One of the most physically gifted athletes to ever play in the NFL.
Lions are asking Calvin Johnson for an answer on retirement this Tuesday as free agency draws near.
Megatron has already said that he's leaning towards retirement, but the Lions don't want to miss the run of wide receiver free agents while they await official word. If Johnson has any loyalty to the team, he will make a decision before free agency opens and not hold them hostage.
