The 49ers added Cyprien in the middle of training camp to compete for a reserve role in the secondary. He had only played in five games the previous two seasons. Cyprien hasn't started multiple games in a year since 2017. At 30 years old, Cyprien's best bet is to latch on with another team in need of secondary depth at some point this year.

Cyprien has bounced around in recent seasons and doesn't project as a reliable starter at this point in his career. Instead, he'll compete for leftover snaps assuming he shows he's healthy after only playing in five games over the past two seasons. The 49ers' secondary is aging and simply needed more bodies. 

Cyprien was originally traded to Atlanta on Sep. 30 from Philadelphia. In his lone game as a Falcon on Sunday against Houston, the 29-year-old recorded two total tackles. Kemal Ishmael and Jamal Carter are the remaining healthy strong safeties in Atlanta.
