Player News
Panthers have signed Michael Griffin.
On Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers made a move to their roster signing veteran safety Michael Griffin. Griffin was released by the Titans back in February before being signed and eventually released by Minnesota in March. Griffin a two time Pro-Bowler played for 141 games over nine years for Tennessee, but his play has slipped in recent years.
Vikings have released Michael Griffin with an injury settlement.
Griffin has spent the last 9 seasons as a key piece of the Tennessee Titans’ defense, but he suffered a back injury and lost out to Andrew Sendejo for a roster spot on the Vikings. At 31 years-old, Griffin will have to prove he still has something left in the tank and that he’s completely healthy before another team gives him a look.
Andrew Sendejo and Michael Griffin are competing for the starting strong safety job but the battle is unlikely to be resolved before the final game of the preseason.
It was Sendejo who started opposite Harrison Smith in the team's first preseason game with Griffin getting the start in Thursday's victory over the Seahawks. Griffin did rack up a sack and collect two tackles in the contest, while Sendejo had three tackles and a sack coming off the bench. This competition will likely run through the end of the preseason, so hedge your bets in IDP leagues for now.
Update: Michael Griffin will get $3 million for one-year.
Griffin has been a proven defensive – and at times special teams – leader over his veteran career, and at only $3 million for one year, consider him the bargain of this wild free agency period. He will fit nicely in Mike Zimmer's stout defensive unit.
