Duke Williams
Player News
Colts signed safety Duke Williams on Monday.
A solid three year contributor for the Bills, Williams is still only 26 years of age and can immediately step in for the Colts and make an impact down the stretch here. He will be expected to fill in for the injured Clayton Geathers.
Duke Williams was released on Tuesday.
The Bills released Williams and signed Safety James Ihedigbo. Williams who is a former fourth round pick in the 2013 draft has never been able to get into the defensive lineup as a consistent starter at the safety position. He mainly played on special teams with his three years with Buffalo.
Williams was originally the top backup Safety for Buffalo heading into the season and is a former fourth-round pick. However he had a couple of bad outings and got snaps only on the special teams unit after that. Buffalo has brought in James Ihedigbo off the free agent market on Tuesday and made room for him by cutting ties with Williams. He has a couple of season of experience and some one will likely take a chance on him as a depth piece in the middle of the season.
Duke Williams could be in line for a significant role to start the season.
Head Coach Rex Ryan has been impressed with the safety's play this preseason, and with starting SS Aaron Williams currently in the league's concussion protocol, Duke Williams could find himself getting early opportunities. If nothing else, his strong play has assured himself a roster spot to start the season.
Duke Williams has left the game on Sunday with an unknown injury.
We will likely know more soon, though we do know Williams is the second safety to go down in this game. If one or both cannot return, Andrew Luck could be in for a huge day.
