Panthers released S Tre Boston.
The team is parting ways with Boston less than a year after signing him to a three-year, $18 million contract. Bosto's release will be after June 1 and save the Panthers $3.55M against the cap. The team could move Jeremy Chinn to safety, where he played in college. Boston has spent time with the Chargers and Cardinals, but has spent most of his pro career in Carolina. Boston in 2020 was graded by Pro Football Focus as the No. 124 safety in the NFL. Boston, 28, likely sign a team-friendly contract with another team this offseason.
Panthers re-signed S Tre Boston to a three-year, $18 million contract.
The veteran safety spent a season with the Chargers (2017) and Cardinals (2018) but otherwise has been in Carolina for his professional career. That won't be changing any time soon with Boston securing $9.5 million in his first season on the deal. Boston is far from perfect in coverage, but he's made at least 53 solo tackles in each of the last three seasons.
Boston finished the 2019 season with 68 tackles (53 solo) and three interceptions (on 11 passes defended) in 16 games played.
Boston inked a one-year deal to return to the Panthers last offseason and proceeded to start all 16 games for his former club. In doing so, the safety posted a career high in passes defended, topping his three-year total from his previous stint in Carolina. With at least three picks and 65 tackles in each of his last three campaigns, Boston should again garner interest as a decent option to boost secondaries league-wide this offseason.
Boston made five tackles (three solo) and an interception in Sunday's 34-31 loss to the Saints.
Boston picked Drew Brees off on a fourth-quarter pass down the middle, setting up a game-tying touchdown for the Panthers. The safety has now gotten his hands on five passes over the last four games, including a pair of interceptions.
