The Cardinals released Johnson on Friday, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.
Johnson was one of two cuts from the roster in advance of Week 17. The Cardinals added wide receiver Malachi Dupre and defensive tackle Pasoni Tasini from their practice squad.
Johnson (hamstring) is active for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers.
Johnson will continue in a reserve role since E.J. Gaines (shoulder) is also active Sunday. However, he's logged over 45 defensive snaps four times this season, bringing him near fantasy relevance.
Update: Leonard Johnson has a chest injury and his return is questionable.
It appeared as though Johnson suffered a chest injury and now the Panthers are confirming it. With Carolina up by double-digit, Johnson's return seems unlikely.
