Woodhead announced his retirement on his personal Instagram page Friday.
Woodhead has been marred by injuries over the past four seasons as he has played in only 29 of 64 possible games. The 33-year-old was released by the Ravens on Tuesday after posting a 2017 season with 14 carries for 56 yards and 33 receptions for 200 yards in eight games. The pass-catching specialist would likely find a landing spot should he choose to continue his 10-year career, but opting for retirement at this point makes sense given his recent injury history.
The Ravens are releasing Woodhead in a move that will save $1.8 million against the 2018 cap, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports.
Signed to a three-year, $8.8 million contract last offseason, Woodhead played only eight games due to a hamstring injury, finishing with 14 carries for 56 yards and 33 catches for 200 yards. His marks of 6.1 yards per catch and 5.1 per target were far below his lofty standards as a pass-catching specialist, with the 33-year-old finally showing some signs of his age. The Ravens may be comfortable using Javorius Allen and/or Kenneth Dixon (knee, suspension) on passing downs, while Alex Collins figures to get most of the carries. Woodhead shouldn't have much trouble landing a new gig, but there's no guarantee he'll be a crucial part of the offense with his next team.
Woodhead (hamstring) is eligible to play Sunday against the Packers after being activated off the IR-R on Saturday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Woodhead injured his hamstring in Week 1 and has been sidelined since. The Ravens seemed optimistic regarding the veteran running back's status throughout the week, so this news does not come as too much of a surprise. He has been practicing with the team for two weeks, but it remains to be seen what type of workload he will see in his return. Javorius Allen figures to see his role as the prime pass-catching back take the biggest hit in Woodhead's return.
Head coach John Harbaugh said Woodhead's (hamstring) timetable for a recovery should be known Tuesday, Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports. "We'll have to see the timeline on that," Harbaugh said.
Woodhead's status is awaiting the results of an MRI, but it should surprise no one that the oft-injured back is again facing a lengthy absence. Once the prognosis emerges, the Ravens backfield will be in the hands of Terrance West and Javorius Allen. West, the top RB entering the season, notched 19 carries for 80 yards and one touchdown in Sunday's season-opening win at Cincinnati. Meanwhile, the early departure of Woodhead allowed Allen to get in the act often, as the latter racked up 21 rushes for 71 yards himself.
