Player News
Davis (concussion) plans to retire as an NFL player, ESPN's John Keim reports.
An official announcement to that effect is in line to be made later this month, but the 36-year-old -- who earlier in his career had a run as a quality fantasy tight end -- will call it quits after concussion symptoms limited him to just four games and 10 catches for 123 yards and a TD for Washington this past season. Tabbed No. 6 overall by the 49ers in the 2006 NFL Draft, the 6-foot-3, 248-pounder racked up 583 catches for 7,562 yards and 63 touchdowns over the course of 198 regular-season games as a pro.
Davis (concussion) hasn't made a decision on retirement, Ben Standig of The Athletic reports.
Davis will turn 36 on Jan. 31, after missing the final 12 games of the 2019 campaign due to concussion symptoms. He's scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, with the potential to earn a backup role if he decides to continue his football career. Davis has caught 583 passes for 7,562 yards and 63 touchdowns in 14 NFL seasons, and his showing at the 2006 combine remains one of the all-time-great workouts in league history.
The Redskins are placing Davis (concussion) on injured reserve, JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reports.
The 35-year-old hasn't been able to play since he suffered a concussion Week 4, leaving Jeremy Sprinkle as Washington's top choice at tight end. Given his age as well as the serious nature of his injury, it won't come as any surprise if Davis decides to retire. His contract expires at the end of the season.
Davis (concussion) was a limited participant in Thursday's practice.
Davis has been limited during practices for seven weeks now, with Washington offering little indication of when he might be ready to resume taking contact. Barring a change in the status quo, Davis will presumably be ruled out for Sunday's game against the Lions shortly after Friday's practice concludes.
