Player News
Jones logged a tryout with the Packers on Monday, freelance NFL writer Howard Balzer reports.
Jones was a casualty last week in order for the Giants to make room for Golden Tate on the roster, but as evidenced by this news, is getting looks elsewhere. The 27-year-old played three games this season with New York, hauling in three of four targets for 38 yards and a touchdown in that span. Jones has had a history in the league, so he certainly makes for an intriguing option to provide receiver depth.
Jones was released by the Giants on Tuesday, Michael Eisen of the team's official site reports.
Jones was released along with fellow receiver Bennie Fowler to make room for Golden Tate and Josiah Tauaefa on the 53-man roster. The 2014 sixth-round pick appeared in three games for the Giants this season, but he only registered statistics in Week 2, catching three passes for 38 yards and a score. He'll now have to find a new opportunity elsewhere.
Jones hauled in three of four targets for 38 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 28-14 loss to the Bills.
Jones played 30 offensive snaps since Sterling Shepard (concussion) and Darius Slayton (hamstring) were out. Jones also passed Cody Core (14 snaps) in the wide receiver pecking order. The 27-year-old won't have this consistent of a snap count when Shepard and Slayton return, but for now he could have a solid role since Cody Latimer suffered a concussion Sunday as well.
Jones signed with the Giants on Wednesday, Art Stapleton of The Bergen Record reports.
With Sterling Shepherd is in concussion protocol, the Giants are bringing Jones back -- he spent the preseason with the team -- to provide depth at wide receiver. He played a similar role with the Lions last year, recording 19 receptions on 26 targets for 190 yards and two scores.
