Dolphins re-signed S Sheldrick Redwine to a one-year contract.
Redwine was non-tendered as a restricted free agent, so he is almost certainly coming back for less than the low tender ($2.4 million). He will compete for a special teams role in camp.
The Dolphins did not tender restricted free agent CB Sheldrick Redwine, making him a free agent.
There's interest in a return to Miami, per the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson. Redwine played just 33 defensive snaps between the Jets and Dolphins last season, as he was waived at last cuts by the Browns and had a sub-month stint in New York before Miami picked him up in October. Redwine showed some promise as a box safety with the Browns in 2019, posting a 68.4 PFF coverage grade in 374 snaps. He'll turn 26 in November.
Redwine had 42 tackles and two passes defensed over 12 games in 2019.
Redwine, a fourth-round pick in 2019, ended up as the starting strong safety after Morgan Burnett suffered a season-ending Achilles injury Week 11. Burnett is under contract next season and should resume the starting role if healthy, but Redwine could move to free safety. That job was held by Damarious Randall in 2019, but he becomes an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
Redwine will start at safety Week 13 against Pittsburgh.
Redwine will be stepping up in place of Damarious Randall, who is inactive for the contest due to an unspecified reason seemingly unrelated to injury. The rookie has recorded three tackles and 40 percent of the defensive snaps or greater in consecutive weeks, but he'll be asked to play a much bigger role Sunday.
