Broncos signed DL Shamar Stephen, formerly of the Vikings.
Although he was a starter the past two seasons in Minnesota, Stephen was far from an impact player, earning his walking papers in March. Now on the wrong side of 30, Stephen will be looking to carve out a rotational role on the interior of Denver's line. He is going from one good defensive mind in Mike Zimmer to another in Vic Fangio.
Vikings released DL Shamar Stephen.
It was only a matter of time after the organization signed Dalvin Tomlinson, who's now in line to start as Minnesota's 3-tech option, to a two-year deal. The move saves the team $3.75 million in cap space.
Stephen recorded 21 tackles, a sack and three pass breakups over 15 regular-season games.
After spending the 2018 campaign with Seattle, Stephen returned to the team that drafted him in 2014 and assumed a starting role alongside Linval Joseph. The 28-year-old Stephen is a valued run-stopper and he averaged 39.2 defensive snaps per game. He's under contract for two more years, and he figures to retain his starting role in 2020.
Stephen (knee) said Tuesday that he expects to play in Saturday's playoff game against the 49ers, Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Stephen was listed as a full participant for Tuesday's practice estimation, serving as another good sign for his chances to suit up Saturday. The veteran sustained the injury during last week's game against the Saints but it appears that it won't keep him out of game action.
