Panthers released WR Seth Roberts.
Panthers GM Marty Hurney reportedly tried to trade Roberts but failed to lure any nibbles. He finishes his tenure in Carolina with four catches for 31 yards across seven games. Keith Kirkwood will continue playing behind Curtis Samuel in the slot when needed.
Panthers signed WR Seth Roberts, formerly of the Ravens.
Like most of Baltimore's wide receivers, Roberts suffered career-lows in targets (35), catches (21), and receiving yards (271) as the team's rarely looked to perimeter option in three-wide sets last year. There are already enough mouths to feed in Carolina, but Roberts could potentially carve out a slot role over Jarius Wright given his history in that spot with the Raiders before jumping ship. He won't be a fantasy option anytime soon.
Roberts suffered an ankle sprain during a 28-12 loss to Tennessee in the divisional round of the playoffs, Clifton Brown of the Ravens' official website reports.
Roberts suffered his injury late in the second quarter, finishing with two catches for 30 yards (plus a drop) on four targets. Coach John Harbaugh suggested after the game that the wide receiver wouldn't have been able to play if Baltimore had advanced in the playoffs. In any case, Roberts will turn 29 in February and is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason. The Ravens seemed to appreciate his work as a run blocker, but he'll presumably need to battle for his snaps even if the team re-signs him for 2020. Marquise Brown and Willie Snead appear to be locked into their respective roles, essentially leaving one starting WR spot up for grabs in Baltimore.
Roberts caught two of four targets for 30 yards in the divisional-round loss to the Titans.
The veteran recorded 21 catches for 271 yards on 35 targets over the course of the regular season and added to that total in the postseason. The Ravens are looking to upgrade their receiving corps in the offseason and build around rookie wideout Marquise Brown. While Roberts offered some marginal value in the offense in 2019, it's entirely possible that the Ravens let him walk in free agency given that he was on a one-year deal.
