Sammie Coates
Player News
Coates was released by the Chiefs on Friday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Coates' time with the team didn't last very long, as he just signed with the Chiefs back in February. He was always going to be hard-pressed to make Kansas City's final roster, as the team boasted plenty of talented pass catchers before his arrival.
Coates was a limited participant at Wednesday's practice due to a hamstring injury.
Coates was one of three receivers limited by a hamstring -- Will Fuller and Keke Coutee being the others. He is expected to play Week 2 against the Titans, but after playing six snaps on offense last week we don't foresee him making a big splash.
The Steelers traded Coates and a 2018 seventh-round pick to the Browns on Saturday in exchange for a 2018 sixth-round pick, the Steelers' official website reports.
A 2015 third-round pick, Coates made a splash early last season with six receptions of 40-plus yards through five weeks, but the rest of his year was a disastrous sequence of injuries and ugly drops. He would've been no higher than fifth on the wideout depth chart in Pittsburgh, whereas the Browns might eventually give him a look in the No. 3 or 4 spot. With Coates out of the picture, Justin Hunter likely will stick on Pittsburgh's final roster as an occasional deep threat off the bench.
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin implied that Coates and Justin Hunter are competing for one roster spot, Dave Lolley of The Washington Observer-Reporter reports.
