Sam Bradford
Player News
Bradford was released by the Cardinals on Saturday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Bradford signed a one-year, $20 million contract with Arizona in March and began the season as the starting quarterback, but has been relegated to third-string duties. The 30-year-old completed 50 of 80 passes for 400 yards with two touchdowns, four interceptions and two lost fumbles before being replaced by rookie Josh Rosen late in the Week 3 loss to the Bears. Bradford will hope to latch on elsewhere after a disastrous stint with the Cardinals, though if claimed on waivers his new team would inherit what remains of his current contract.
Bradford has been a full go during training camp and has taken all first-team reps, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.
Bradford had his health monitored closely throughout the Cardinals' offseason program, taking limited reps at minicamp to try and reduce the wear on his surgically repaired left knee. However, with training camp in full swing, Bradford has increased his workload to a full go as he prepares for the regular season. The ninth-year quarterback is locked in as the Cardinals starter to begin the season, with Mike Glennon and rookie Josh Rosen in tow as backups.
While he still expects Bradford to be the starting quarterback, Cardinals coach Steve Wilks noted that "every position is open for competition", Kent Somers of The Arizona Republic reports. "We got Sam to be our starting quarterback and I would still say that is the case," coach Steve Wilks said. "I'm very excited about Josh, what he can bring. Every position is open for competition."
Wilks seems to be leaving the door open for Josh Rosen, who the Cardinals selected at No. 10 overall after trading up with the Raiders. The outcome was far from ideal for Bradford, as Rosen was once viewed as a likely top-five pick and possible Day 1 starter. Based on Wilks' comments, a training camp battle figures to ensue.
Bradford intends to sign with the Cardinals, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Bradford presumably will serve as the 2018 starter while Arizona develops a young quarterback behind him. With Case Keenum reportedly going to Denver, Kirk Cousins to Minnesota and Tyrod Taylor to Cleveland, the Jets and Bills are the only remaining teams with clear needs for a veteran QB, which means Teddy Bridgewater, A.J. McCarron and Josh McCown may be fighting for two spots. Bradford will enjoy throwing to Larry Fitzgerald and David Johnson, but the 30-year-old's troublesome left knee may not hold up for long behind a porous offensive line. The Cardinals need to do more work in the coming weeks if they want to field a 2018 offense that's any better than mediocre.
