WR Ryan Switzer announced his retirement from the NFL after five seasons.
A practice squad player for the past two years, Switzer, a slot receiver and return specialist, retires a few months after trying out for the Panthers. He was a fourth round selection by the Cowboys in the 2017 NFL Draft. Switzer's career year came in 2018 with the Steelers, when he caught 36 of 44 targets for 254 yards and a touchdown.
Free agent WR Ryan Switzer had a tryout with the Panthers on Tuesday.
Switzer didn't play an NFL snap in either of the last two seasons, landing on Cleveland's practice squad after not making the Steelers in 2020 and going on the Browns IR in the 2021 preseason. Carolina's wideout corps isn't stacked by any means, but it would be surprising to see Switzer emerge with any real fantasy role in the NFL after two missed seasons. It's more likely he'd profile as a returner.
Switzer finished the 2019 season on injured reserve.
Switzer's season was cut short due to a back injury after hauling in eight catches on 11 targets for 27 yards . He also totaled 195 return yards. Switzer is a mediocre receiver who may no longer be needed in 2020 for his return skills with the addition of Diontae Johnson. Switzer has one year remaining on his contract.
Pittsburgh announced Thursday that Switzer (back) has been designated to return from injured reserve.
Since Switzer was first placed on injured reserve in Week 11, he won't be eligible to play for at least two more weeks. As such, he won't be available for Sunday's regular-season finale against the Ravens, and he would also remain out for a potential wild-card game the following week, should the Steelers make the playoffs.
