Player News
Paul announced Tuesday that he has chosen to retire from the NFL, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Paul was released by the 49ers on Friday and said even though he feels he can compete for a roster spot this season, he doesn't think his body can handle it. The 29-year-old was known for his days with the Redskins, when he racked up 68 catches for 856 yards and two touchdowns in six seasons.
The 49ers released Paul on Friday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Paul was competing with a plethora of tight ends for the No. 3 tight end spot, and it appears he did not do much to make an impression. He was let go to bring in another potential depth tight end. The veteran's potential options could be narrowing down at this point in his career.
Paul agreed to a contract with the 49ers on Friday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Paul spent his first six seasons as a depth tight end for the Redskins before suiting up for six games with Jacksonville last season. A knee injury ultimately sent him to the IR, but he never found a new home after he and the team came to terms on an injury settlement in mid-October. He will need to make an impression if he hopes to earn a spot on San Francisco final 53-man roster, as he is competing against a plethora of other candidates.
Niles Paul says his shoulder surgery was a success.
Paul suffered his shoulder injury against the Bengals in London, and has been placed on the season ending IR for the second straight season now. He was a major part of special teams, and the Redskins may let him go during the off season.
