Morgan Burnett
Player News
Free agent S Morgan Burnett announced his retirement from the NFL after 10 seasons.
32-year-old Burnett was the 71st overall pick of the 2010 draft out of Georgia Tech and spent his first eight seasons with the Packers before one-year stints with the Steelers and Browns. His career essentially ended with a 2019 torn Achilles’ in Cleveland, as Burnett was out of the league last year. Burnett started 112 career games, registering 10 interceptions, 9.5 sacks, and eight forced fumbles. He was more of a box safety.
Browns released S Morgan Burnett.
Burnett turned 31 last January. The 10-year veteran started eight games for the Browns in 2019, recording 41 tackles, one interception and two sacks along the way. Perhaps Burnett's best years are behind him, but he could still attract some interest on the open market as a backup.
Burnett underwent surgery to address his torn Achilles on Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Burnett sustained the injury during last Thursday's loss to the Browns and moved to injured reserve earlier Tuesday, and he'll now be able to begin the recovery process. Justin Burris is expected to fill in at strong safety for the Browns in his absence.
Burnett (Achilles) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday.
Burnett suffered a torn Achilles during Week 11's win over the Steelers and is ruled out for the remainder of the season, so this move was expected. The veteran safety suited up in eight games with the Browns, recording 41 tackles, two sacks and an interception. Juston Burris is slated to fill in at strong safety opposite Damarious Randall. Burnett has one year remaining on his deal with Cleveland at a cap hit of $4.825 million.
