Mitchell Loewen
Player News
Loewen was released by New Orleans on Tuesday, Rod Walker of The Times-Picayune reports.
Loewen finished Monday's 30-28 win over Houston with a pair of solo tackles, helping the Saints start the 2019 season off on the right foot. But with David Onyemata (suspension) returning to the fold, Loewen was expendable, so the team opted to waive the 26-year-old to make room for Onyemata's return. Loewen played 11 snaps in Monday's game.
The Saints activated Loewen to the active roster Monday, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Loewen originally signed with the Saints' practice squad after being let go by Detroit on Aug. 30. The 26-year-old was able to join the active roster after the Saints released veteran defensive end Wes Horton. Loewen will provide depth to New Orleans' defensive front in their season opener against Houston on Monday night.
Loewen signed with the Saints practice squad, Mike Triplett of ESPN.com reports.
Loewen didn't have staying power with the Lions after latching on with them at the end of 2018, and he's back in New Orleans on the practice squad. He appeared in three contests in his first two NFL seasons -- both with the Saints.
Loewen signed a contract with the Lions on Friday, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.
Loewen was waived by the Saints on Dec. 27, and finds a home in Detroit just one day later. His spot on the 53-man roster comes following the placement of A'Shawn Robinson (knee) on injured reserve. Expect Loewen to serve a depth role during Sunday's season-finale tilt against the Packers.
