A former fifth-round pick of the Raiders, Hurst joined the 49ers in 2021. He only appeared in two games that year and missed all of 2022 with a torn biceps. Injuries have been a constant issue for Hurst, but he did flash potential early in his career. He tallied 7.5 sacks through two seasons with the Raiders before being phased out of the lineup in his third year. Heâ??s a solid flier for the Browns, but they won't be relying on him to make any starts this year.

The team signed Akeem Spence in a corresponding move. Hurst suffered the injury at the beginning of training camp and will now end the year on injured reserve for the second season in a row. Drafted in the fifth round by the Raiders, Hurst showed some promise as a pass-rushing threat from the interior early in his career. Through two seasons, he had seven 7.5 sacks in 29 games. Injuries have since derailed his career. Spence has played on four teams in the past three seasons and doesn't have a sack or a TFL in that time.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan broke the news of Hursts' injury Saturday after the team's practice. Hust is now looking at his second-straight down season with the 49ers after appearing in just two games last season due to an ankle injury. Prior to joining the 49ers in 2021, Hurst had spent three seasons with the Raiders, totaling 78 tackles, nine TFLs and eight sacks while appearing in 40 games. Hurst is one of three 49ers d-linemen dealing with injuries, which has quickly thinned out an otherwise deep group.

Shanahan put linebacker Mychal Kendricks on the same timeline to return as Hurst. The 49ers added Hurst this offseason after the Raiders waived him. Hurst notched 7.5 sacks in his first two seasons but was phased out of the Las Vegas defense in his third year. If he can make it through the final cut to 53 players, he'll play a rotational role for San Francisco when healthy.
